I’ve been thinking about what I can share with you that is uniquely about organizing that might truly be helpful in a sea of Covid-19 information that you've already heard.
All of us are spending a lot of time at home these days. You’re certainly faced with a lot of stresses today, some of which you can control and others that you can’t. One thing you can control is the clutter that you suddenly can’t escape.
Fresh filing systems for young adults: 2 examples
Many clients have said, “But no one ever taught me to file!” That’s why I love to work with young adults to create files as their very first important docs come about. Suddenly, a lot of you have kids home for an indefinite period of time... College kids might be retuning to rooms at home that could use some organizing, and are dumping school papers on top of it.
We think we need time, but what we really need is focus.
When I sat down to write the post How one of my clients systematically (and simply) dismantled her piles, I realized that my work sometimes feels like an exercise in tricking people into focusing. Though the example shared in the post was my client’s brainchild, it had me reflecting on the countless ways clients focus so clearly when we’re together.
Things learned when organizing my kitchen
Getting organized is an excellent, real-time tool for learning about yourself. I was no exception when Nic and I excavated our tiny kitchen to purge purge purge. We cook A LOT, so every inch is used. Since it is a small kitchen, every item must be used. Still, over the years we accumulated too much.

As much as I love what Marie Kondo has done for American homes, even more I love that people are starting to explore what minimalism means beyond half-empty drawers and closets. Does it really end there?
First steps on how to attack a paper impasse
I just attended a professional event where I was the only one who did not work in commercial real estate development. I had to be very explicit in explaining what I did because there was no context for why I was there!
