I love/hate a good journalistic piece that gets me fired up about rampant and environmentally damaging consumerism. The Atlantic delivers with the 6 minute America’s dopamine-fueled shopping addiction. It explains the double dopamine hit we get with internet shopping: the moments of purchase and delivery.

My client has two gorgeous, huge heirloom trunks in her bedroom. They held clothing, but not well… Like I’ve said a thousand times before, “We should have taken a before shot!” You can probably imagine though what a stuffed trunk full of clothes typically looks like; Like strata, the closer to the bottom we got, the more folded (though more forgotten) items of clothing were.  She couldn’t see what she had and therefore was mostly using the top few items.

A big thing my clients struggle with is inertia - for all sorts of reasons. What I love about my job is that we not only break it, but sometimes get results like this in 3 hours when it had been put off for YEARS!

Just this week I came across the box pictured here in a client’s home. That’s my handwriting from December.  We had run out of time in our session and I knew I wouldn’t see her again for probably a couple months. 

It can feel anticlimactic that the physical remains of a decades-long career sometimes fit neatly in a stack of boxes. Some of my clients have multiple boxes that they brought home on their last day of work, even if that last day was many, many years ago.

So you’ve made some tough cuts and are finally willing to let go of what amounts to staggering tangle of old electronics. Woohoo! This is just part one though. 

It’s so easy to just load them into a contractors’ bag and drag them to the curb, especially since there’s something especially liberating about decluttering mystery cords and obsolete gadgets
