How I used Evernote this week to clip an interior design article

Do you keep magazines just because they have one good article?  If not, do you tear out articles or design pages only to have an "articles to read" or "design articles" folder?  Or worse, do these articles pile up in all corners of your bag, office, and home?  I avoid this with Evernote.  Last week I saw a stunning home in Architectural Digest that I just had to share with a friend.  I pdf'd it with my phone via Genius Scan (though I could have just as easily jpeg'd it with the Evernote app), saved it to Evernote, sent it to my friend, and ditched the magazine.  Next time my friend and I need (and I don't use the word "need" lightly) I can just look it up in Evernote, rending the colorful page much more useful than if they were stuffed in a bag. View the very colorful note here.

How I used Evernote this week to immortalize (and toss) my nieces' artwork

Tempate-1-Evernote-2-200x300.png

Evernote is a one stop shop for zapping kids' artwork. I save about 1 out of 10 pieces my nieces create for me. Everything else gets photographed into my "Memorabilia" Evernote notebook. I only have about 50 notes in here as of now. I deliberately do not tag these notes. Just like a "real" memorabilia box, I like opening this notebook and rummaging through it, all but forgetting what I added but having the joy of rediscovering it. Once that number gets to 100+, I might change my mind about that. The latest work of art from my nieces is a fan art triptych dedicated to my cat, Zucca. They lovingly drew pictures for him that we posted above his food. A few weeks later after Zucca was tired of looking at them, into Evernote they went. View the installation art piece here.

How I used Evernote to Onboard My New Virtual Assistant

18So how did you pull off this week's newsletter you ask?  I've been working with another Sandy, literally another Sandy!  My new assistant, Sandy, is beginning to take on some of Sandy #1's tasks.  Since Sandy #1 and I shared an extensive Evernote notebook, I invited my new Sandy to join.  Sandy #1 had done such a good job of documenting her tasks, that I have been able to just give my new Sandy a tour of the inner workings of The Inspired Office without reinventing the wheel.  Helpful notes in this shared notebook are logins, examples of old newsletters, YouTube publishing schedule, Sandy's weekly tasks, email templates, and more.  This Evernote notebook essentially serves as The Inspired Office's back office handbook. How to share a notebook:

  • Invitee must have an Evernote account.
  • In Notebooks, select notebook to share.
  • Click the share icon.
  • Invite via email.

How I Use Evernote To Keep Track of Who Has Keys to My Home

17How many times have you made copies of your keys and passed them out for safe-keeping, for the pet sitter or for family members, swiftly forgetting who in the world has access to your home?

Last week I had to make some new keys for my building and unit.

This brought me to a note in my "Home" notebook called "Keys to my home."  In here I keep track of the 5 people who have one or both keys to my home.

How I Used Evernote to Recall a Band My Friend Told Me About

14I was making dinner the other night, thinking: "What was that band Jamile told me about when I visited her NYC?"

I opened my "Music to Listen To" note in my "Music" notebook and there it was.

Click here to see my ongoing list of music to listen to.

You'll see that I have notes from many various sources.

How I used Evernote to Access a Wall Measurement at home while antiquing

15I was at my favorite antique shop in Virginia (right at Shenandoah National Park) on Saturday where I saw some mantles that I loved.  Having been wanting to makeover my bare fireplace for some time, I immediately turned to Evernote to find the measurements of my corner fireplace wall.  Because I had this measurement & an image of my fireplace in Evernote, I was able to score a gorgeous antique marble mantle for $40!  Stay tuned for makeover pics!

Click here to view my "Fireplace Mantle" note in my "Home" notebook to see the new mantle (and the others I was considering) and the "before" shot of my fireplace.

How I Used Evernote to Save a Coupon From My Email

Ever wish you had that coupon on you? I forwarded my REI coupon to Evernote this week, knowing that I'd use it over the weekend.

Instead of cluttering up my inbox, it was there waiting for me in my "Shopping" notebook.

Was a piece of cake to bring up at the register.

How I used Evernote to Find a Set of Quickbooks Instructions

12I had to run some reports from Quickbooks for my accountant.  I never remember how to do this, so I have my bookkeeper's directions saved in a note called "How to run a report in Quickbooks."  This is the 2nd time this note has come in handy.

Evernote is the ideal place to store instructions of all types. This particular one is in my "Inspired Office" notebook and tagged "Accounting" and "Instructions."  It's not a terribly interesting note, but you can view it here.

Evernote's New Scannable App

scannableIf you have Evernote and you're not yet also using a scanning app, you'll want to try their new scanning app, Scannable for quick scanning of documents as PDFs or JPEGs.

Personally, I'm so used to Genius Scan which seems to work as seamlessly with Evernote so I haven't switched over, but just want to give you options.

Read a helpful review of Scannable here.

How I Used Evernote During a Talk to Take Notes & Photos

Evernote I didn't set out to create a note for a talk I attended last week, but I ended up quickly creating one right as the talk ended. I heard serial entrepreneur Miki Agrawal speak in DC last week.

As I do at many talks, I pay attention to the delivery as much as I do the content.  It's how I get ideas for outlining my own talks.

In this case, I photographed some of her slides, imagining how I could create a similar slide for one of my talks.

I also typed in some one-lines that stuck out.  This note "Miki Agrawal Talk, 3/3/15" is saved in my Inspired Office notebook, tagged, "Examples to Use" and "Public "Speaking" and you can view it here.

How I Used Evernote to Capture My Video Recording Set Up

Last week, inspiration hit and I recorded 11 new YouTube videos in about two hours.

I found the perfect spot in my bedroom to achieve the clean white background I've been wanting and I want it to be exactly the same each time I record there.

I photographed my set-up (stool, 2 yoga blocks and a mini tripod) so I can remember exactly how to set up my "recording studio" for next time.

Click here to see my note with pictures.  This lives in my "Inspired Office" notebook and is tagged "YouTube."

How I Used Evernote This Week to Save Lighting Ideas

In planning to paint my entire home white, I realize that now is the time to upgrade a lot of my lighting.  View my Light Shopping note in my "Home" notebook to see what's on my wish list.

Evernote is proving to be a great way to mood board the fixtures I'm eyeing. I've added screenshots of the ones I love the most to see how well they go together.

How I Used Evernote This Week to Recall What Best Buy Recycles

evernote Twice last week the topic of Best Buy's recycling program came up. Folks wanted to know what they accept.

Luckily, I had Evernoted a picture of the recycling station that sits at the entrance of each Best Buy store and brought it up within seconds.

View picture here.

In addition to these categories, you can drop off any electronic for recycling at their customer service desk.

Have you used their service?

How I Used Evernote to Save A Food Product I Want to Buy

evernote tips I had the most delicious Italian honey at my best friend's house in NYC over the weekend.

I Evernoted it so that the next time I'm in an Italian grocery store wondering, "What was that magical honey I had at Jamile's?,"

I can bring up this note in my Food & Recipes notebook.

How I Used Evenote to Make Home Maintenance Easy

7How many times have you found yourself in the hardware store frustrated that you don't have the measurement you need for that gizmo at home that needs to be replaced? I had to replace my air filter, so in the air filter aisle, I simply pulled up my note "My Air Filter" in my "Home" notebook that reads 18" x 18". That's it.

How I used Evernote this week to Save a Precious Memory

6I'm slowly starting to fill the my Evernote "Memorabilia" notebook.

My sister recently visited someone's home that was covered in the, um, "distinctive" wallpaper that was in the house we grew up in.

My parents moved out of that house 8 years ago, so she was having a major de ja vu moment.

She texted me the pictures and I just had to save them since I don't know if I have any from our house!
