How Marie Kondo organizes a bookshelf (I did it and it works)

Last week I spent two days with a client sorting her books using author Marie Kondo's super strict, but feelings-based method. Her video here explains the steps.

We followed the method in a way that would have make Kondo proud - and it worked (minus the team of assistants)!

My client was able to unload 8 boxes of books to Books for America in DC.

After having gone through this experience, which was the most dramatic book purge I've been a part of, I can't stress enough the importance of taking every single book off the shelf. It's a bold move and it's easy to make excuses not to do it, but it helps you to think clearly and thoroughly.

Think you're up for the Kondo book purge?  How many boxes of books do you think you can fill? Share comments below!

Marie Kondo Folding Video in New York Magazine

I just love organizing superstar author Marie Kondo more and more.  She teaches us to respect our things, let joy be our guide, and how to fold our undies.

If you've finished your copy of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and are jonesin' for another Kondo hit, read this article in New York Magazine. There's a gem hidden inside: a video of Marie breaking down how to fold your unmentionables!

The Book I Wish I Had Written

magic tidy bookAdmittedly, I haven't even read it yet*, but everyone is buzzing about Marie Kondo's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.

It teaches her "KonMari" method which is centered around the simple question - "Does this spark joy?" - Which I like so much more than "How old is it?" or "When is the last time you used it?"

It can be applied to anything from offices to closets, as described in this article and this one.

She swears by holding an object in your hands to feel the energy of it.  I agree that this can be effective, as sometimes I have to hold a paper to generate ideas.  However, sometimes my clients are so overwhelmed that they let go of more when I'm doing the holding!

Either way, this 4 word question is a powerful one that can clear the messiest of messes.

Where in your home or office do you see this method being most effective?

Please share in the comments!

* I wrote this on a Monday night and the following Tuesday morning one of my more intuitive clients gifted it to me!  'Twas meant to be!
