How to organize your keys for less than $5

Absolutely everything can be better organized.  Sometimes even the most organized people have a nasty tangle of heavy metal for a keychain.  I forget how painstakingly organized mine are until a client asks, “Let me see that keychain!” I show them my Nite Ize Key Rack (that’s only $3.99).

Here’s why I love this so frills cheap doodad:

Why we all need a coaster for our phones

It’s so simple.  So much so that it's almost a little ridiculous that this exists, but we all need it: The WindFall coaster, “A Quiet Home for Phones.”  Phones are problematic for countless reasons, but here are two: they are homeless vagabonds, and the mere sight of them is a distraction.

No purse. No wallet. Here’s how.

You may already know that I don’t carry a purse (but do carry a bag when working with clients), and have one of the tidiest wallets on YouTube, but I’ve now gone even more minimal.  Since April I’ve been using my iPhone case to carry the barest of essentials: my driver’s license and personal debit card.  Should I need to carry cash or use another card, I do carry my wallet.

How to maximize the backs of your doors

When getting acquainted with a client’s home or office, I always look at the back of their doors.  Most of the time they are blank, while items desperately in need of storage sit nearby on the floor.  In this case, a small utility room off of an office needed attention.  The answer was clear: the elfa Door & Wall Rack at The Container Store.  You can either purchase one of their pre-arranged systems, or choose baskets a la carte as I did.  Here’s the demystified break-down of this exact system:

The junk in my trunk

About a year ago I took down two popular videos from my YouTube channel because I had another plan for them (watch the other here), but they’re back!  My trunk is not as organized as you may think.  I sacrifice this little area of my life for my clients!  We joke that it’s a rolling Container Store.  Overheard in many consultations is “I have the perfect thing in my trunk!  Be right back!”  Click the image to watch.  Surprised to see something in here, or surprised to not see something you expected I’d have?  Please share in the comments.

What’s in my magic toolbox

About a year ago I took down two popular videos from my YouTube channel because I had another plan for them (watch the other here), but they’re back! Though my toolbox is even smaller now than it was when I filmed this a couple years ago, not much has changed.  If I were working with you today, here is exactly what I’d be bringing through your office door.  This is the case you see in the video.

The most beautiful notebook on the market

The most beautiful notebook on the market is finally mine!  I’ve been lusting after Appointed’s monogrammed notebooks ever since the DC based company launched earlier this year.  Mine just came this week, breaking my 4 year streak of buying the same Staples notebook over and over again (and I do still love it).  I knew it was time for an upgrade though when a stylish Washingtonian friend pulled her Appointed notebook out of her bag. It’s not just a pretty face. I love it because:  Evernote Camera Roll 20151020 153248

- it’s beautiful enough to sit out on your desk - spiral binding lets you lay it flat when open - it’s just the right size - the lines are just the right faint color and are justified, running the entire width of the notebook - it’s made in the USA (by a DC based, woman-owned company)

- I earn instant classy points for the monogram (and I don’t even tend to like monograms) Buy your monogrammed Appointed notebook, along with other gorgeous, office accessories at www.appntd.com.

Finally! A Productivity Planner from the creators of the Five-Minute Journal

The creators of my beloved Five-Minute Journal have created a beautiful Productivity Planner.  If it’s designed anything like the Five-Minute Journal, this is going to be a journal you can’t wait to fill-out - that actually works.  The new planner claims to guide your focus on the three to five most important tasks of the day - the same technique used by Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, and others.  Projected delivery date is January 2016. Pre-order yours via Kickstarter here.  (I bought 4 - 1 for me and 3 for gifts.)

Read this book about how to share (and make $ from) your creative process.

show-your-work-cover1.jpg

On the plane to CA for the NAPO San Francisco-Bay area chapter conference last October, I read Austin Kleon's entire book Show Your Work.  Not one page of this little powerhouse is fluff.  If you are a consultant, blogger, writer, artist, or anyone making a living creatively, this is a must-read.  I ready most everything on a Kindle these days, but this book was a joy to hold in my hand.  Makes a great gift too for any artist or creative you know!

I love how she hid her files

Closet-for-Kacy.jpeg

My client from about a year ago recently moved. She just sent me this picture of where she put her files in her new house! I just love it. It's always fun to see the ideas that emerge as a result of saying "no" to the traditional filing cabinet. We've all seen office closets before, but this is different because it's not in the office and it's not strictly for supplies. This is where she keeps her working files. A few tips from Carol: - I left enough space between the shelves so that you can easily see the file folder labels from a standing position. It wouldn't work if you had to crouch or use chair for the files you use often. - The top shelves with the boys report cards do need a stool for access, but I figured that once or twice a year that would be ok. I saw a little folding stool at the Container Store that I might get. - The only other thing I may add is some closet lights under each shelf. - Supplies are in wine create

How I Usually Create Drawer Dividers

Last week I helped my friend Racheal Cook of The Yogiprenuer organize in Richmond, VA.

We organized some drawers using an ad-hoc (but instantly effective) process that I turn to often.

Rarely asking clients to buy supplies before we start, since we don't know what we need until we dig in, I used what we could find.  I'm always on the lookout for boxes of all sizes that can be repurposed with the flaps cut off. Most of the time it just so happens that we have exactly what we need!

From this:

kacy drawer

To this!

drawer good

All we used to makeover this drawer:

  • an iPhone box
  • an iPad box & lid
  • an Amazon box
  • a perfume box
  • a random round box

Yes, she can certainly beautify this further with more permanent drawer dividers, but this quick solution buys her some time until she can find just the right pieces.

I supported the Droplet on Kickstarter. So should you.

dropletThe nice folks over at Droplet reached out asking if I'd help support their Kickstarter campaign. I'm asked to promote products more and more, and this is the first one I think is unique enough to share.  I get no kickback - in fact, I spent $ to support them and I think you should too!

Here's why: It's so seldom that I come across a new productivity product that feels truly helpful, especially since I'm not a big believer in gadgets.  Droplet is a physical button that records habits, sets reminders, and even triggers notifications to others and automates online orders via their app.

Just place on any object (vitamin bottle, gym bag, meditation chair, supply closet, etc) and when pressed, the button tracks your habits and so much more.  You've gotta watch the video!  It's one of those "why didn't I think of that" products.

The best gadgets help us to live a better life offline, and I think Droplet will do that. Let's help get them funded before May 19th.  Click here to donate via Kickstarter.

An Extreme Magazine File Makeover

Reader Cheryl Togashi in Washington state so kindly shared with me a paper system she created. I sometimes use magazine files to sort paper, but haven't quite done it like this.

gold boxes

Here are a few things she did differently that I just love:

  1. She spray painted it gold!  (Reminds me of this cool file box that was also painted gold)
  2. She turned it on it's side.
  3. She utilizes clear plastic folders in tandem with plastic tabs.

It works because it is visual, pretty, and she has clearly thought through which exact categories need to be in pain sight.  Also, note that 3 tab folders will not work in this system, as the right folder tab would be hidden in the box.

Here are the supplies she used to do this:

IKEA Knuff Plywood Magazine File

Post-It File Tabs

Translucent Pocket Files

Cool Book Alert: The Organized Mind

organisedmindI read the cliffs notes version here in this Time Magazine article and had quite a few a-ha moments just from the article.

I absolutely agree with what Daniel Levitin teaches about creating separate work spaces for different tasks.

Using the same computer screen for balancing the checkbook, responding to emails, watching cat videos and more apparently does a number on our hippocampus.
