[New video!] Minimalism Tutorial - The College Art Project

I’ve observed that there's something seemingly off-limits about donating anything handmade. It could be from a friend, child, or family member, and it’s equally true for our own handmade items. Just because it’s handmade though, doesn’t mean you have to keep it forever. That is what I told myself when I decided to say goodbye to my college fabric dyeing class final project.

[Video] The lists you need when prepping for a big trip

Who’s that crazy person with 6 lists on their refrigerator door? A professional organizer who is about to go to Bali for 3 weeks. I found this video on my phone while organizing photos from our August trip. The closer we got to our trip date, the faster the lists multiplied, though each became essential.

How to label when you don’t want to look at labels.

Without labels, miscellany will surely creep in, rendering the most elegant of containers clutter catch-alls. But, we don’t always want big tacky labels turning our spaces into kindergarten rooms. This is why I often cut little custom labels to place on the top edge of a drawer.

How I planned my wedding with Post-It notes

Essential as it was, Nic and I still have nightmares of this Post-It board.  The 106 notes in my Evernote “Wedding” notebook helped us to essentially have a paperless planning process, but it was this board that got things done.  For most projects, a blend of digital and hard-copy tools are needed.  This wedding was no exception.

Craigslist hack for quickly unloading the big stuff

My organizer friend Deron Bos out in California just posted in his excellent blog the two magic words to use on Craigslist for quickly unloading the behemoth piece of junk sitting in your garage or basement.  His post helped a client to unload one big, bad, ugly piece of defunct workout equipment in 30 minutes flat.  He even provides a word-by-word template for your posting.  Read Deron’s Craigslist Magic post here (and don’t forget to sign up for his helpful newsletter)!

How Marie Kondo organizes a bookshelf (I did it and it works)

Last week I spent two days with a client sorting her books using author Marie Kondo's super strict, but feelings-based method. Her video here explains the steps.

We followed the method in a way that would have make Kondo proud - and it worked (minus the team of assistants)!

My client was able to unload 8 boxes of books to Books for America in DC.

After having gone through this experience, which was the most dramatic book purge I've been a part of, I can't stress enough the importance of taking every single book off the shelf. It's a bold move and it's easy to make excuses not to do it, but it helps you to think clearly and thoroughly.

Think you're up for the Kondo book purge?  How many boxes of books do you think you can fill? Share comments below!

How To Not Lose Your Phone Charger

How many times have you heard "Is this my charger or yours?"

Confidently answer next time by putting your name on yours.

Because my sister, friends, boyfriend, and mom all have identical iPhone chargers, I put my name on mine recently.

Spread the word! No more nameless phone chargers!

An Extreme Magazine File Makeover

Reader Cheryl Togashi in Washington state so kindly shared with me a paper system she created. I sometimes use magazine files to sort paper, but haven't quite done it like this.

gold boxes

Here are a few things she did differently that I just love:

  1. She spray painted it gold!  (Reminds me of this cool file box that was also painted gold)
  2. She turned it on it's side.
  3. She utilizes clear plastic folders in tandem with plastic tabs.

It works because it is visual, pretty, and she has clearly thought through which exact categories need to be in pain sight.  Also, note that 3 tab folders will not work in this system, as the right folder tab would be hidden in the box.

Here are the supplies she used to do this:

IKEA Knuff Plywood Magazine File

Post-It File Tabs

Translucent Pocket Files

Tested: The KonMari Folding Method

I gave my copy of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up a smirky sideways glare when author Marie Kondo outlined a precise method of folding and rolling clothes. Nope, I was never going to take organizing that far….until I did and it almost doubled my drawer space.  Last week, my friend and client, Cassandra Metzger, who gave me the book got on-board too.  This is her drawer makeover.

Before

before-kacy-tops.jpg

After

after-kacy-tops-.jpg

What you can't see here is how spacious it was when we were done! So, we filled it with shirts from a neighboring drawer and closet!  Between this and another drawer, she freed up 15 hangers in her closet and gained about half a drawer.

Along the way we did a few things to ensure this will last:

- Shirts and tanks must be folded in a way that the detail that differentiates it from those of the same color show on the rolled edge.

- Stick with me on this one…you do need to measure the drawer's depth, or just use one perfectly rolled piece a your guide.  If rolled pieces are even half an inch too long, they'll get caught and drag when opening.

- The drawer either has to be full or you'll need drawer dividers to keep pieces from coming unrolled.

I did this in my own closet too with identical results.  Even more than the extra space, I love that I can see each piece.  Nothing is hidden.  Once you roll and unroll a few pieces to get your little rhythm down (which actually takes very little time) you won't go back!

I filmed this video from a client's home office. I helped her get a wrangle on the first 20 minutes of her morning, to set the tone for the rest of her day.

This is how we did it, using a visual tool to help it stick.

How to Organize a Desktop with File Boxes

Do you know that simple file boxes can create miracles in your office? This is a system I've done time and time again with clients who don't want to use filing cabinets. It's a great alternative and works well as a mobile, accessible filing system.  Read the first comment below for an update from my client who let me film this at her desk!

Are you an 'out of sight, out of mind' person like my client?

If so with whom?

What issues do you run into and what would you change about your partner's organizing style?
