Organizing humor (especially if you have grown children!)

If you are a fan of The Onion’s humor and/or have grown children you must take a moment to enjoy Father Still has Complicated Series of File Folders with Grown Son’s Name on Them. This was shared with me by a client who has two grown children, and we started working together when they were still in high school!

One reason why I don’t have a home office

Last week my new client was giving me a tour of her home when she sheepishly shared that she and her husband sleep in separate bedrooms. I told her that Nic, my husband, and I do the same thing - and we’re practically newlyweds. She exclaimed - “Oh I feel SO much better!” This isn’t the first time I’ve had a near identical exchange.

Behind the scenes of author Gretchen Rubin playing professional office organizer

You would think it would be easy for me to criticize someone else organizing an office (especially if they’re not a pro), but when bestselling author Gretchen Rubin organized her sister Elizabeth's office and recorded the process for her podcast, so many moments made me smile.  Not

The NPR Fresh Air interview with Long Haul Truck Driver & Author, Finn Murphy

Given how much I enjoyed this Fresh Air interview, I’m eager to read long haul truck driver Finn Murphy’s book The Long Haul.  He’s spent decades packing and hauling Americans' belongings, accumulating a wealth of wisdom on the topic of stuff.

Obama’s portrait artist exalts people just as they are.

I was a great admirer of New York artist Kehinde Wiley’s mammoth portraits before he revealed his portrait of Barack Obama at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait gallery in February.  His subjects are often urban African-American men, though sometimes Brazilian or African, plucked from the street in model-scout style.

Kids don’t want to inherit your nice stuff? Some advice.

This article is worth sharing if for no other reason than three people sent it to me.  The New York Times’ Aging Parents With Lots of Stuff, and Children Who Don’t Want It explores exactly that issue.  As aging parents downsize, their beloved objects don’t necessarily find a warm welcome in the homes of their children.  With the rise of minimalism’s popularity, less and less, children have the space or desire for their parents' things.

The article that could change the world

I’m idealistic enough to believe that anyone who reads George Monbiot’s The Gift of Death post will be moved, and awakened by it.  It is a sharp, yet such eloquent tirade on the impact of consumerism, specifically, cheap trinkets that only exist for a quick laugh or thrill.

Should you practice scruffy hospitality?

When our to do lists are a bottomless tangle our countertops have gone missing, and our desks and floors are covered with signs of indecision and lack of time,  it’s easy to feel like we have lost control.  This year I’ve personally adopted the motto of “make the most of what you have, with where you are.”

My organizing advice in the International Business Times

A tech-free desk?

Imagine sitting down at a desk that is straight out of the 20th century: beautiful pens, favorite notebooks, blank paper, perhaps some art supplies, not a device in sight. Believe it or not, you can get away with a tech-free desk -  if it’s your second desk.

A Day in the Life of a Minimalist

Joshua Millburn, half of the famous duo, "The Minimalists" guest posted A Day in the Life of a Minimalist on Leo Baubata's Zen Habits blog. You’ll agree that Joshua has absolutely earned the label “minimalist,” not just by buying less, but also scouring his days for superfluities, thus, finding true breathing space in his life. This is one of the most unique and inspiring “day in the life” posts I have ever read, stressing habits over routines.
