Dressing For Summer Weather In Washington DC

Many of the people who visit Washington DC do so for business reasons. As the capital of the United States, DC is frequently visited by lobbyists, government employees, and other professionals.

While DC can be an excellent place to make connections, it can be challenging to head to the area during the summer. Summers in DC tend to be both hot and humid. Temperatures are often very high; it's not unusual to see temperatures over 90 degrees for more than seven days straight. Occasionally, temperatures rise over the 100-degree mark.

This combination of hot and muggy weather can make it difficult to find professional clothing that is weather appropriate. Here are a few suggestions as you search for work clothes to wear in a DC summer.

Wear Natural Fabrics

Synthetic fabrics are always a bad idea in hot weather. They don’t breathe well which it makes hard for your skin to breathe.  Thus if the fabric can’t breathe then, it will be difficult for you to avoid sweating.

Thinner, natural fabrics will be a much better choice. While you may be uncomfortable, you won't have to worry about sweat stains.

Avoid the Wool Suit

While wool is an excellent fabric to wear in the winter, it can cause a lot of problems during the summer. Although it is a natural fabric, it's also thick and heavy. It can make you even more uncomfortable so put your summer suit in the closet.

Always opt for lighter fabrics when you can. Don't take a wool suit with you to DC in the summer. If you have to wear a wool blazer, try pairing it with a pair of khakis.

Dress In Layers

Even in the summer, you will find when you're in the office or sitting in a theater or restaurant; the temperatures can be very cool. Most businesses keep the air conditioner on all summer long. However, you won't have the benefit of air conditioning when you're outdoors.

Because of this, you should try to wear layers whenever you can. When you're not with colleagues or clients, you can take off a blazer and get cool.

Find Ways To Freshen Up

If you wind up having any sweat issues, you'll want to take care of them. You don't want to have to worry about sweat or body odor during the workday.

You may want to carry wet wipes that you can use to clean up. You should also try carrying deodorant. If you have any issues, run to the bathroom, freshen up, and get back to work. You'll feel comfortable and be ready to take on any challenges that await you.
